In early October we started to look through and read every submission and came across one that tugged at our heart strings. The submmission went like this...
“My friend and coworker Michelle Berkley deserves to win for her son Elijah Berkley. He’ll 14 on the 20th of October. Here’s her story: October 20, 2002 she was home with 2 ttoddlers. Her 2 year old daughter got away from her and before she could catch her, a guy speeding down the highway hit and killed her daughter. She and her husband 2 years later had a son born in the anniversary of the daughters death. It’s hard on the family-and especially Elijah because he never got to meet his sister. I feel like he needs to be celebrated extra special on HIS day. Thank you for the consideration.”
After communicating back and forth we decided it would be better if I talked to Michelle herself, so I could create the perfect cake for this sweet young man. After asking her to tell us more she wrote;
“My name is michelle Berkley and my son Elijah berkley will be 14 on the 20th. Elijah's birthday is very bittersweet to me as a mother. On October 20, 2002, I lost my only little girl in a tragic accident. Elijah was born October 20, 2004. I love my son with all my heart, but this day is so hard for me. We will celebrate on the 21st, and thanks to this very special lady, my son will have a wonderful cake! Thanks for helping me remember my little girl and celebrating my little boy!”
Pulling at my heartstrings even more we made the cake, the cake that made this young mans day special, and his family smile on an ultimately hard day, and that’s why we’re here, why we’re doing this. Thank you everyone for your participation and love!
